La chiesa gotica della Madonna dell’Orto è stato il primo monumento importante ad essere restaurato a Venezia dopo la disastrosa alluvione del 4 novembre 1966. Un comitato inglese, l’Italian Art and Archives Rescue Fund, si è fatto carico del restauro. Questo libro è un racconto, anche per immagini, di quel progetto.
Una descrizione della ricostruzione delle pareti, del pavimento e di altre parti seriamente danneggiate della chiesa – il chiostro, la cappella Valier, la facciata – seguito dalla descrizione della pulitura e riparazione di una importante scultura di Bartolomeo Bon, San Cristoforo col Bambino. Il volume illustra anche il restauro dei dipinti di Tintoretto, per i quali la chiesa è famosa – tra questi il Giudizio Universale, che misura circa 14,5 metri di altezza.
 

The Gothic church of the Madonna dell’Orto was the first major monument to be restored in Venice after the disastrous flood of 4th November 1966. A British fund was responsible for the restoration: the Italian Art and Archives Rescue Fund. This book is a written and pictorial account of the project.
A description of the rebuilding of the walls, of the reconstruction of the floor and other damaged parts of the church – the cloister, the Valier Chapel, the façade – is followed by an account of the cleaning and repair of an important sculpture by Bartolomeo Bon, the St. Christopher and Child. The book also illustrates the restoration of the paintings by Tintoretto for which the church is famous – among them the Last Judgment, which is almost fifty feet in height.
